This Week at
The Knitter's Edge

This is the last newsletter of the 2010 year.  Instead of looking back at how wonderful this year has been for us at The Knitter's Edge, I am looking forward at how exciting next year can be.  I am hopeful and will do my very best to add so many new things to the shop, the classes, and the newsletter, that 2011 will be absolutely amazing!

The first changes you should see will be to the newsletter, my primary method of getting information to all of you. I have big plans:

1. More info on new yarns.

2.  More links to manufacturers' websites for colorcards

3.  More free patterns.

4.  You-Tube Videos- I hope I can pull this one off.

5.  More educational content.

HOLIDAY HOURS:

We will be closed on Saturday, New Year's Day. This week, we will be open all of our regular hours other than Saturday.

Our Mitten Tree

OUR MITTEN TREE

The Mitten Tree will be coming down this week.
But we hope you will continue to knit mittens for the kids.  Winter is barely upon us and we will be accepting and distributing mittens through the end of January.

Serveral people have asked for the patterns for the winning mittens.  Several of the winners were personal designs from the winners, but I will try my best to get the patterns.

Our New Charity Knitting Project

Last January we knitted Hats for the Homeless. I was blown away by the number of hats we collected- 499! What we accomplished had a definite effect on our community.  So much so that Laura Howell- head of our Charty Knitting group- has already received many, many requests for hats for this 2010-2011 winter season.

While we can't know how harsh the weather will be this winter, we can be sure that the need will be greater than last year as there are many more people struggling due to the poor economy.  To put it bluntly, the number of homeless in our community is rising.

I am confident we can make a significant difference once again this year.  I have planned ahead and developed new patterns and have ordered additional yarns.

So through the month of January, I will have a new pattern available each week- if not 2 patterns each week ( I don't want to get in over my head).  We will have suitable yarns available at very reasonable prices, and several samples on display.

This year it has been requested that we have scarves and cowls knit too,  so I will be adding patterns and yarns for those items as well.

This is something we can do for OUR community.  Let's see if we can beat last years numbers!

To get everyone started, we will continue to feature Encore Mega- (the fastest knitting yarn there is) in our swimming pool at a discount price of $5.00 a ball.  Just one ball can make a hat in record time.  You can use these 3 hat patterns for this yarn.  I will also have a new pattern for the next newsletter. so you can spend some time over the New Years Weekend knitting up a hat or two.

One ball Mega hats:  All 3 hats shown here use a 16" circular size 15 plus large double pointed needles for the very top.  All 3 of the following patterns are available at the shop, with the purchase of Encore Mega.

maria's mega hat1.Basic Rolled Brim Hat- great for the absolute beginner- just the knit stitch needed.

Encore Mega Ribbed Hat2. Ribbed Hat- The simple ribbing gives you a hat that will snuggly fit any head.

Why is Encore so great?

At The Knitter's Edge, we sell a great deal of Encore- Encore Worsted, Encore Tweed, Encore Chunky, Encore Boucle, and Encore Mega!  Just to name a few.  We do love this yarn- but why?

Encore
Encore is a very reasonably priced wool blend great for afghans/throws, baby garments, hats, gloves/mittens, scarves, sweaters and much more. It has great pattern support from Plymouth and fabulous stitch definition for textured patterns. Encore is a wonderful substitute for patterns calling for worsted weight wool.  At the gauge of 4.5-5 sts to the inch, it is in a range where there is a multitude of patterns available.  This Acrylic/wool blend is machine washable and dryable for very easy care.  If you have not yet tried an Encore product- please do so soon.  I believe you will be pleased.

Countdown to Christmas

The Countdown to Christmas is over, and I hope you all enjoyed the 23 free patterns available through this long project.  Please stop by this week to see the Advent calender one last time and pick up any of these patterns that you need.  All are free with the yarn purchase.  They will still be available after this week, but right now all are still shown together with the actual garments.  This is the best and last time to see them all at once.

This last pattern was made into kits for you- and for only $10.00 you can make up a fast and easy to knit scarf- for youself or for someone else.  Many kits still available- when they are gone- they are gone.  Get one now.
