This weekend at
The Knitter's Edge

This email as well as the next are being written ahead of time for auto delivery while I am off in Sunny (hopefully) California for TNNA- the yarn industry's national trade show.

I will come back with many new ideas, and some insight into where knitting may be heading during the upcoming year.

I hope PA has nice weather and good knitting for all of you while I am gone.

Friday, January 8
10:00 - 12:00 PM with Stephanie

Cream Cowl
The cowl was the biggest hit for the Holidays- now it is time to knit one for yourself.  Try a lacey one- Stephanie has some lovely new patterns to try out.

Saturday- January 8
1:00 - 3:00 PM with Pat
Sue's Scarf (from Sue the Ewe)
Sue the Ewe
Even if you are not making Sue the Ewe and Sam the Sam- you have to just love her scarf.  So Pat will guide you through knitting the scarf only if you wish.  This lovely lace scarf can be worn by the Ewe, or by You!  Takes just 1 hank of fingering weight sock yarn.  Pattern will be provided.  Bring circular needles- size 3-4.

Saturday- January 9
1:00 - 3:00 PM with Eileen
Toe up socks

 Spiral socks

Eileen and I did these socks as a class project several years ago.  They were a huge hit.  Knitted in a heavy DK weight yarn- they work up fast with a fun slip stitch pattern using a print and a solid.  The afterthought heel makes the knitting an easy go.  Bring double points- size 4.

Many more classes will be coming in the upcoming weeks- we have lots and lots of ideas

A January Challenge- How is it going?
Our January Challenge to knit 100 hats for the homeless is now officially underway!
Jen made a terrific poster to help us keep our hat count.  Stop by to see it!
I put 2 patterns in the last week's email- one for Encore Worsted and one for Encore Mega- both yarns were also put on sale.
Encore Chunky is also on sale this week- I figure you need a pattern for this yarn as well.  I do not have a photo at the present time ( will soon).  The bottom is ribbed, with a turn up brim, and the top is knitted in stockinette stitch.  This hat is also knit in the round.  For next Tuesday's newsletter I will be adding other patterns as well-  for Encore Boucle and Rimini Rainbow.

Print out the patterns here, by highlighting the pattern itself and hitting print, or stop in for a hard copy.   Lets show that we can knit 100 hats for distribution in our community.  This is a very worthwhile project, so please help me show just what a great bunch of knitters can do!

Remember-as an added incentive- for every hat brought in- we will add your name to a drawing for a prize to be awarded at the end of January.  Not sure what it will be yet- a gift certificate, ball winder, needle set- Amanda and I will come up with something well worth winning.

We will be putting appropriate yarns on sale throughout the month (starting this week with select Encore products on sale at 10% off) and will provide the patterns freely.

Only 1 rule:  To get your name into the drawing- please use yarn from the Knitter's Edge.  We will accept hats knitted in other yarns- as the need for these items goes far beyond our need to sell yarn, but we feel it is fair to restrict the prizes to our customers.  We will have lots of yarns available at low to bargain prices so this will not be a hardship for anyone.

January Challenge Hat Pattern- Encore Chunky
Encore Chunky Ribbed Bottom Hat

Size:  Adult medium
Materials: 1-100g ball of Encore Chunky, 16" circular needle size 9 & 10, set of double pointed needles size 10, or those needed to achieve gauge, and 1 stitch marker.
Gauge: 3.5 sts = 1 inch in stockinette stitch.

With larger needle, loosely cast on 72 sts.  Place marker and join, taking care not to twist the sts.  Change to smaller needle and work in k2/p2 ribbing for 4", ending at the marker.  Change to larger needle and work in st st (knit every round) for 4", ending at the marker.  On the next round, begin decreasing as follows, changing to double pointed needles when necessary.

Round 1:  *(Knit 7, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 2:  Knit 1 round even.
Round 3:  *(Knit 6, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 4:  Knit 1 round even.
Round 5:  *(Knit 5, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 6:  *(Knit 4, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 7:  *(Knit 3, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 8:  *(Knit 2, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 9:  *(Knit 1, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 10:  *(K2tog); repeat from * around.

Cut the yarn leaving a 12" tail, thread it through the remaining stitches, draw up tightly and secure.  Weave in the ends.

Now for the Sale Stuff

REMEMBER:  If you are a class member- you get an additional 10% off any sale prices.

As promised, this week we are starting sales on yarns appropriate for hats.  This week:
All Encore Worsted and Chunky are on sale for 10% off regular prices.
We also were able to get our hands on a LOT!!! more Encore Mega which is still sale priced at $5.00 per 100g ball.
With just 1 ball of either yarn- you can knit a hat for our 100 hats challenge.  Turn in the hat and get your name in a drawing for some good stuff (to be determined later).  Get your name in the drawing once for every hat turned in- so get knitting and turn in as many hats as you can.  How fast can we hit that 100 hat mark?

All sale prices good until the end of the week Saturday, Jan 9.
