A Lesson on Pooling

What exactly is pooling?  Pooling is when colors clump together and knit up into big splotches, pools, or puddles of color.
Flashing is similar to pooling in that colors clump but will stripe and move around like a bolt of lightening in your knitting.  Pooling and flashing both have their place, but in my Flax Baby Sweater was NOT one of those places!
I started with 2 hanks of Joe Cole’s new What The Flock 17 micron Aran in the colorway Lady Rainicorn.

Using the FREE top down pullover pattern Flax by TincanKnits, I quickly knit up the yoke and proceeded to the body- working on it at an IronPigs game where I spent more time watching the game than watching what was occuring on my sweater.  Not Good!  Once done, I did not like the flashing or lightening bolt look that was created by the color repeat on this number of stitches.
If it happened on a hat… WOW!! I would have LOVED it- but not here.  So I ripped the body back to the underarms.  This next time I alternated 2 balls of the colorway- working 1-2 rounds with each ball before changing to the other.  I am so pleased with the outcome!

I could have done a bit more alternating near the bottom, but overall I am very happy with the sweater and so love Joe Cole’s new colorway Lady Rainicorn.  Bottom line:  preventing pooling is easier than you think.
